GLA:D™ Canada: Hip & Knee Osteoarthritis Program
What is the GLA:D™ Program?
GLA:D™ is an evidence-based education and targeted exercise program developed by researchers in Denmark for individuals with symptoms of hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA). At J & V Physiotherapy, we are proud to offer this world-class program to help you manage pain, improve function, and regain your independence.
Rather than just treating symptoms, GLA:D™ focuses on strengthening the muscles around your joints and improving your movement patterns to reduce the load on your hip or knee.
Why Choose GLA:D™?
Research from thousands of participants has shown that the GLA:D™ program leads to:
- Significant Pain Reduction: Many participants report a 25-30% reduction in pain levels.
- Improved Mobility: Increased walking speed and physical activity levels.
- Reduced Medication Use: Decreased reliance on pain relievers and anti-inflammatories.
Delayed Surgery: Many participants find they can delay or even avoid joint replacement surgery.
What to Expect at J & V Physiotherapy
Our GLA:D™ program is led by certified physiotherapists and consists of three main components:
- Initial Assessment We start with a comprehensive 1-on-1 assessment to measure your current functional level, discuss your goals, and ensure the program is safe and appropriate for you.
- Two Neuromuscular Education Sessions Education is key to recovery. These sessions teach you about the “why” behind your symptoms, how OA works, and how to protect your joints during daily activities.
Group Exercise Sessions (6-8 Weeks) Twice-weekly group sessions focus on Neuromuscular Exercise (NEMEX). These exercises are specifically designed to improve joint stability and are supervised and progressed by our experts to match your specific ability level.
Who Can Benefit?
GLA:D™ is suitable for individuals with all stages of hip or knee osteoarthritis. You do not need an MRI or X-ray to join; a clinical diagnosis based on your symptoms (stiffness, pain, or decreased function) is often all that is required.
Important: This program is ideal for those who want to stay active, those who find walking or stairs difficult, and those looking to optimize their health before or instead of surgery.
